Character Survey of Doom

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Karen is 5'10", 140#, with a naturally slim build.

2. How old is she? 31

3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch? She tends to take up as little space as possible, but she isn't a shrinking violet. She's just a New Yorker. Even though she grew up in Vermont, she's grown used to the city in the few months she's lived there.

4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? She's a healthy young woman.

5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? She can be a bit tense, but for the most part, when she's around friends, she's fairly well put together.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror? She sees herself as very plain, very unassuming. Other people see her as beautiful.

7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? She's light-skinned with a very light dusting of freckles.

8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style. She has long, straight blonde hair.

9. What color are her eyes? Blue.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? Not really.

11. What are her chief tension centers? Karen holds her tension in her shoulders and her neck.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit? Karen tends to like pastel and neutral business wear, and comfortable t-shirts with jeans. She loves wearing dresses, but they tend to be very simple and elegant.

13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them? Her clothes do fit well and she is very comfortable in them.

14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences? She likes older clothes, thrift store finds for the weekends, when she's relaxing. Her styles are never haute couture, but tend to be timeless. You can always find nice dresses to wear for work at the thrift store. Sometimes they even still have the tag on them.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Karen has a secret love of frilly under things, when she can afford them. So matching bra and panties, pretty much always. Bikini bottoms. Lacy bras.

1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? She has a medium pitch voice. She sounds very non-specific American. No strong accent to speak of.

2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate? Her normal speaking voice is moderate in tone. She can speak very quickly and passionately when she's angry or upset about something.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? She can be very awkward when she's trying to flirt. She can also curse up a storm at times. She's not afraid to use swear words to make her point.

4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency? English.

5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations? Nope.

6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words? She's not a good public speaker, but she can have her moments. She prefers to write her thoughts down.

7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? She can be very eloquent on paper.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart? She's very clever, far more street-smart than book-smart. She's also a quick learner, and her mind strings together details into a complete picture very quickly.

2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate? She thinks constantly. On her feet and deliberately.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? Karen can be both logical and intuitive. She does tend to be far more idealistic than most.

4. What kind of education has the character had? She's finished four years of college, with a degree in English.

5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about? She's working as a legal assistant currently, but she has an interest in journalism.

6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? Probably more of an introvert. She enjoys going out with friends, but she also likes her alone time.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? She's a bit of a mixed bag. She gives no outward sign of the traumas she's been through. She keeps a smile on her face and tries to be cheerful. But she can also be incredibly driven, when it comes to finding out the truth and getting justice for someone. And she struggles to keep doing that. She has her moments of doubt.

8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? Karen can be a bit suspicious of new people, but they'd never know it. What might appear as timidity is seriously just caution.

9. Is she more likely to act, or to react? She is very much likely to act.

10. Which is her default: fight or flight? She's also good at picking her fights. She'll run first, but you back her into a corner, she'll fight.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Karen has a healthy and sometimes vulgar sense of humor.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them? She has PTSD. She drinks to deal with the worst of it.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person? Her brother's death. The murder of Daniel Fisher, and her subsequent incarceration and exoneration. Her kidnapping by James Wesley and subsequently, her murder of him. It was in self-defense, but she decided to keep her involvement secret from everyone, for fear of repercussions from Fisk's organization.

14. What does she fear? Discovery. Failing.

15. What are her hopes or aspirations? She wants to make a difference in the world for people who are unable to defend themselves.

16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her? That she killed Wesley.

1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents. She had a good, loving relationship with her parents.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? She had a brother who died in a car crash. They were typical siblings, but they loved each other.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand? Not currently.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them? Matt Murdock & Foggy Nelson are the two people she's closest to.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? Current point in canon, Karen doesn't really have a best friend.

6. Does she have other close friends? Matt & Foggy. Maybe some folks at the paper.

7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people? Karen is very personable woman, and people like her. The only people she doesn't get along with are assholes who treat people like shit.

8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends? Karen thinks both are equally important in their own way.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once? Single.

10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? No.

11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest? Her first crush was someone from high school, probably. Her latest is definitely Matt Murdock.

12. What does she look for in a romantic partner? Someone with a quick mind and a good sense of humor. Someone who is passionate about doing the right thing. Someone who isn't afraid to fight for what they believe in. Someone who cares about her.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any? No children.

14. Does she have any rivals or enemies? Enemies: Wilson Fisk

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale? She's at most a 1.

16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her? Karen enjoys sex. She doesn't make a habit of casual sex, but she's not above enjoying herself once in awhile. She prefers to have an emotional connection to her partner. Like all things, she tends to care deeply about the people she lets get close to her, so she doesn't feel good about herself when she does indulge.

17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? She likes big shoulders, deep voices, gentleness. She also likes someone who will take control, but who doesn't mind yielding it. Turn offs, arrogance, casual cruelty. Weird bedroom habits? She's been alone a long time, so she has a little collection of toys she likes to use.

1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type? I don't know her canon sign, so I play her as a Scorpio.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life? She's religious by upbringing, but she has a beef with God. He's fucked up and cruel, and she'll still try to do the right thing, but not because she's afraid of him.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? She has a very strong moral code. Threatening her life? Compromised it hardcore.

4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? She's tolerant and curious.

5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them? She has a gut feeling about who she can trust and who she can't.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? She's not exactly comfortable, but she's not exactly poor either. She's getting by on a journalist's salary at the end of season 2.

2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her? She's lower middle class.

3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others? She lives in a simple apartment that she takes care to make comfortable within her means.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on? Books. Fresh flowers are also an indulgence.

5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else? She's just starting out a career as an investigative journalist and it is her calling.

6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time? She does a lot of reading. And she enjoys going out for a night of drinking.

7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? She enjoys all kinds of cuisines, and has a drawer full of takeout menus at home. She does cook at home, but only a few times a week. Salads mostly. There's always beer and whiskey in the house.
